Martin Paull

Martin Paull has practiced professionally since graduation from the South Australian School of Art in 1992. After graduation, Martin was awarded a studio residency at Adelaide’s Central Studios, where he worked and exhibited until moving to Canberra in 1995. Martin has exhibited widely in Australia with several important galleries – Barry Stern, Maunsell Wickes, Solander, Ben Grady, and Beaver Galleries. Martin was a finalist in both the 2020 and 2010 Blake Prize and was shortlisted for the Blake Prize in 2011 and in 2012. Martin was a finalist in the M16 Drawing Prize (2017) and Mission to Seafarer’s Prize (2015). Martin was also shortlisted for the 1955 Moet and Chandon Australian Art Fellowship and was a finalist in the 1994 Santos Art Prize, receiving a highly commended. Public collections featuring Martin’s works are - Artbank Australia and the Canberra Museum and Gallery.

    Sea of knives was painted in response to the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami. This painting, Tapestry and Inheritance explore the intersection of art movements: Geometric Abstraction, Op Art, and Neo-Geo. They are from a series that focused on hypnotic geometric abstraction using rhythmic, repeated patterns with luminous colour gradients. Key to the paintings are the strong movement from light to dark colours, optical illusion, and shifting fluidly between flat pattern and three-dimensional depth.

    This bushfire series is my response climate change, drought and the inevitable bushfires which follow. It starts with Prometheus, who steals fire from the gods and is then punished. Lost in the anthracite (a type of coal) forest refers to burning of fossil fuels. Several of the paintings were shortlisted for the Blake Prize and have Biblical references (I am who I am The sixth seal).
